Application and enrolment

Application criteria

With a central focus on the relational and experiential aspects of learning, we view each person as a whole, integrating their unique life experiences and growth journey into the process.

Rather than requiring a background in mental health, we are interested in who you are and how you engage with yourself and others. Our program welcomes students from diverse professional and academic fields—including but not limited to Business, Consulting, Engineering, HR, Education, and Technology—who are open to deep personal exploration and the rich, transformative experience that gestalt training provides.

Prospective students should meet one of the following key selection criteria before applying:

  • Relevant life or work experience, and a history of therapy or personal development.
  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant field, e.g. counselling, psychology, social work, nursing, psychiatry, occupational therapy, medicine, teaching, welfare and community development, or pastoral care is generally desired.
  • Two years of work experience in a related field with professional supervision or mentoring (i.e. work experience after completion of a relevant undergraduate degree), or willingness to gain experience concurrent to the program.

Application and enrolment process

The three key steps for admission to the training program are completing an online application, undertaking an in-person interview, and providing personal and professional referees.

The online application involves completing the application form addressing key selection criteria, providing a copy of your professional CV, and submitting names of your referees. A $200 application fee is payable when you submit your application. Once your online application is reviewed and accepted, you will be invited to the interview process.

The group interview will be held prior to you enrolling in the course. It is held at the Gestalt Centre office at 622 Lygon Street, Carlton North, Victoria. The group interview provides an opportunity to share your experience and engage in dialogue with other participants in the group. It will also give you an opportunity to experience the group setting.

Key dates and times for group interviews are 6.00 pm – 7.00 pm on the following Thursdays: 30 May 2024; 3 July 2024; 29 August 2024; 3 October 2024; 14 November 2024; 12 December 2024; 20 February 2025.

There is a 30-minute individual interview which provides an opportunity for applicants to expand on their experience and their interest in joining the training program. In this interview, there will be an opportunity to ask more detailed questions about the course.

Following the interview, we will undertake a reference check with the referee details you have provided. Once that is complete, an offer to enrol into the course is communicated personally by telephone and followed up with an enrolment form.

Applicants confirm their place by submitting the signed online enrolment form and paying a deposit of $1,500. The deposit is fully refundable up until 30 September 2024, partially refundable (50%) by 1 January 2025, and non-refundable after that.

Please note that class sizes are usually capped at 16 students per class. We encourage early applications to secure a spot.

My experience of studying at GTA has been life-changing. I have made life-long friends and feel I have been enriched beyond learning facts or techniques.

The group process and experiential learning were the real standout. It increased my self-awareness and awareness of others in so many enriching ways.

The internship allowed the experiential process to go to another level. The supervision experience was excellent. The support that was provided while I had my training wheels on was excellent and the collegial experience with peers was very valuable."
