About ConnectGround
ConnectGround is a community-based counselling and psychotherapy clinic that provides affordable individual and group therapy sessions. The ConnectGround clinic operates Thursday and Friday from the Gestalt Centre in Carlton North.
ConnectGround’s primary focus is on fostering a strong therapeutic relationship to facilitate personal growth and adaptability. In addition to counselling and psychotherapy services, there are opportunities for interns and volunteers to gain hands-on experience in working with clients to develop their skills and professionalism.
ConnectGround internship requirements
Most internships begin in the third year of the Gestalt Therapy Australia (GTA) training program. Typically, these placements last between 12 to 18 months.
Our clinic provides interns with valuable opportunities to practice their skills. Interns are expected to commit to a 4-hour shift per week. During this time, they will have the opportunity to work with up to 3 clients. Interns also receive fortnightly group and individual supervision which are mandatory. They also have access to professional development opportunities.
Our experienced clinic staff balance the needs of both students and clients ensuring high-quality counselling and psychotherapy services to the community.
Internship exemptions
You can apply for an exemption from the internship if you meet all of the following requirements:
- You have already completed a professionally recognised training program, have an established practice, and hold professional membership to a relevant body (AASW, APS, ACA, PACFA etc).
- You are providing face-to-face counselling or therapy in either an organisation or a sufficiently established private practice concurrent to your studies. You have access to equipment for video sessions, and access to clients who are willing to be filmed.
- You receive individual supervision with a GTA faculty member regularly.
In some circumstances, a student who meets some of the above criteria will opt for a shorter placement at ConnectGround in order to further develop their skills and practice. This requires a minimum 6-month commitment from the student.
Internship benefits
Interns have the opportunity to accumulate client hours while working as part of a vibrant team in a thriving community clinic. They gain valuable experience and build confidence in working with a wide range of clients and issues for long, medium, and short-term periods under supervision. All interns are provided with a clear learning and development plan, where reflection and self-evaluation are emphasised.
Interns can also make a meaningful contribution to the community through their work at ConnectGround. Some of our students continue to volunteer at ConnectGround after graduation.
